Drafting Manager

Position Summary

The drafting Manager is a dual-role leader overseeing the drafting department while producing detailed construction drawings for commercial steel structures and envelope systems. This individual will manage a team of drafters for commercial steel structures and envelope systems, establish drawing standards, coordinate with engineering and project teams, and ensure timely and accurate delivery of project documentation. The Drafting Manager ensures that design intent, constructability, and quality are aligned in every project.

Key Responsibilities Team leadership & Management

· Lead, mentor, and supervise the drafting team, including workload assignments, performance reviews, and skills development

· Establish and enforce drafting standards, quality checks, and drawing protocols to ensure consistency

· Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure constructible designs

· Identify and implement process improvements and software optimizations to improve department productivity

· Forecast staffing needs based on project pipeline and work with HR to recruit and onboard talent

Hands-On Drafting & Technical Execution

· Prepare, modify, and review detailed shop drawings, erection plans, and fabrication drawings for steel structures, envelope systems (ACM, IMP, corrugated metal), and custom components

· Translate architectural and engineering designs into buildable, field-ready drawings

· Work with CAD and BIM platforms to support multiple simultaneous projects

· Ensure drawing compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and client requirements

· Provide support during submittal, revision, and as-built phases of project lifecycle

· Experience developing a book of standardized details is desired but not necessary

· Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

· 7+ years of experience in drafting, commercial steel construction,or building envelopes

· 2+ years of team leadership or supervisory experience in a drafting or design environment

· Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, or equivalent 3D modeling tools

· Strong understanding of steel detailing, fabrication practices, and construction sequencing

· Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings

· Excellent communication and organizational skills

· Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $85,000.00 – $120,000.00 per year
